In Honduras, a Mess Made in the U.S. It's time to acknowledge the foreign policy disaster that American support for the Porfirio Lobo administration in Honduras has become. Ever since the June 28, 2009, coup that deposed Honduras’s democratically elected president, José Manuel Zelaya, the country has been descending deeper into a human rights and security abyss. That abyss is in good part the State Department’s making. By Dana Frank, The New York Times, January 26, 2012

A State of Siege in Northern Honduras: Land, Palm Oil and Media One of the reasons that President Manuel Zelaya was deposed on June 28, 2009 was the fact that he was actively carrying out a program of land reform, implementing laws that were on the books but never enforced, actively investigating and rectifying cases of fraud and corruption that had deprived campesinos of their land. By Peter Lackowski, Upside Down World, November 30, 2010

The Case of the Honduran Coup According to a thorough memo from the US Embassy, there was no question about the illegality and illegitimacy of the coup. That is indeed what President Obama called it. But then the US backtracked for months, finally ending in a fiasco, which drained enormous good will away from Obama across Latin America. (The July 2009 memo was released by WikiLeaks 11/28/2010.)
The memo should provoke further investigations as to what forces intervened to trump the memo, but that's not all. Nikolas Kozloff provides a quick review of what WikiLeaks so far has revealed concerning Latin America.
